The idea for the back drop originated from Caithness Quilters' participation in the Wick Heritage Fair in 2003 "Under Caithness Sky".  Pictures depicting areas of Caithness were made by members.  Then they were arranged on a landscape background and made into a series of panels. The project was started in the summer of 2003 and completed in the summer of 2004.

The committee organized the assembly and arrangement of the panels on the landscape under the guiding eye of Ann Cullop who dyed the fabrics and quilted the panels.

Panel 1 -

  1. Caithness Skyline - Janet Maclennan - "Wonderful Caithness Skyline"
  2. Silver Darlings (Neil Gunn) - Ann Sillar
  3. Dunbeath Castle - Helen Mackay - "This is my home land."
  4. Lybster Harbour - Ann Cullop

Panel 2 -

  1. View of Rangag - Irene Milne
  2. Halkirk, Scotland's first planned village, 1803 - Catherine Swanson - "Original Plan of Halkirk."
  3. Thurso Town Sign - Fiona Murdoch
  4. Holborn Head - Katrina Stewart

Panel 3 -

  1. Dunnet Head from Castle Hill - Cathy Gunn
"Made from a photograph I took of the foreshore which always amazes me."
  2. Mary Ann's Cottage - Sheila Jack
"I chose Mary Ann's Cottage as my panel as it is in my area. I got a photo of it and enlarged it. I started with the wall of the house and built round it, not knowing how I would do it. I was quite pleased with the result."
  3. Stacks of Duncansby - Ella Henderson
  4. View from the Stacks of Duncansby - Lorna Bruce
"Love of the power of the sea and majesty of the rocks."
  5. Ruin of Buchollie Castle, Freswick - Lynn Ball

Panel 4 -

  1. Girnigoe and Sinclair Castle - Ann Ross
"This is my favourite place in Caithness. It's unique, just like the little primula scotica clinging on the frame."
  2. The Grey Bools and Old Man of Wick - Joyce MacDonald
  3. Wick Floral Clock - Ella Lawrence
"Done as a tribute to the town's gardeners who always create impressive floral displays. The clock hands are set at 7.10, the time when we are passing on our way to Quilters' meetings."
  4. The Monument - Zelia Mackay
"The Monument is at the North Head. I pass it every time I walk along the front, and on a fine day I take a seat to watch the sea."
