:: Challenge Competition 2009 - Singing the Blues

The Challenge

To present a quilted item inspired by words or music from a spoken, written or musical piece which is of special significance to you.

Is there a piece of music you love, a verse from a poem which sends a shiver down your spine, a snatch of a song which always takes you back to a special time or place, or a passage of words which illuminates your thoughts or sums up the essence of something important to you?

When?

Challenge entries to be displayed on the morning of Saturday November 28th 2009.

Where?

In a display area within Pulteneytown Parish Church.

What?

An heirloom quilt which you hope will be treasured for years to come.

Where and for whom?

Your quilted item should have an end destination or recipient in mind.

This place or person is to be indicated on a display card accompanying your quilt.

You might write 'a lap quilt for my husband to remind him of our special tune' or 'a Christmas gift for my grand-daughter with words taken from a poem her mother used to recite as a child. I have included fabric from the dresses I used to make for her.' 'a little landscape inspired by the words of my hero. This will be framed and hung in my hall.'

The Colour?

Well, it could be blue, and blue should feature somewhere in your quilt, though if 'the green, green grass of home' is going through your head, then blue might not be the dominant colour in your entry. If you're spoiled for choice on what words or music to base your entry on, go for something with a blue connection or a blue mood.

The story and the journey

I hope thinking about this quilt will give you as much pleasure as making it and that the making of it and its inspiration will be reflected on by those who look at it many years from now. Bearing this in mind, you may wish to record your ideas, sources of inspiration, fabrics and techniques in a sketch book or album to accompany your quilt down the years.
